The Haig Glacier is located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Alberta. It is about an 18km run away from just about anything so it makes for an excellent spot to focus on training and enjoying real skiing in July.
A typical day on the Haig starts at 7am with breakfast, followed by a 45-55 minute hike from the base camp up to the snow. We were lucky enough during our camp to have below freezing temperatures on the glacier nearly every night and as a result enjoyed nice, firm skating tracks in the early morning before switching to classic as the sun warmed the snow up.
After a few hours of skiing each morning we would hike back down to camp for a quick dip in the river, a nice big lunch, and an afternoon nap. Our evenings were spent stretching, playing cards, watching old episodes of the O.C (thank you Harry for bringing these!) and enjoying the incredible meals our camp staff Joel and Jodi prepared for us.
