First some background on the event. This Canada cup race weekend would serve as qualifier for the World Cups scheduled on home soil in Quebec City, and Canmore in the coming weeks of December. This set the stage for a very competitive men’s and women’s field which consisted of 62 men and 40 women respectively. The field also included some international racers from the Swiss Sprint Team. To make things even more interesting most of our team had not yet skied on snow this year, so a 1.3 km all out skate sprint on a gruelling course was possibly not the easiest way to start a race season. I guess you could say that XC Ottawa racers were starting in the "deep end"!

As usual though, we rose to the occasion and everyone posted some solid results!

On the men’s side we occupied the following positions:

Andre M. – 35th, 2:45.06, 12.32 seconds off 1st, 27th Canadian.

Matthias P. – 43rd, 2:49.99, 17.25 seconds off 1st, 35th Canadian.

Karl S. – 46th, 2:51.60, 18.85 seconds off 1st, 38th Canadian.

Lee H. – 47th, 2:51.72, 18.98 seconds off 1st, 39th Canadian.

A strong showing, but sadly didn't quite cut it to race the waves, which only took the top 30.

On the women’s side we had two top 30 spots, and narrowly missed putting all three of our women in the top 30!

Sheila K. – 20th, after qualifying 26th (3:30.32 + 25.57s off), finished 4th in the quarter final.

Megan M. – 24th, qualified 28th (3:31.08 + 26.32s off), finished 5th in her quarter final.

Ingrid H. - 31st, 3:35.84+31.0s off the winner, and missed the quarter final by only 0.04 seconds!

For those interested, the glide wax of the day was Vauhti HF Violet, Vauhti Zero Fox bloc, and Red Creek riller -5 to -15 degree C, chevron pattern.

Now for some photos, and a French version to follow!

An article on today’s classic race will follow shortly, thanks for reading.

A bientôt! :)
