Out on the Hardwood Trail at Arrowhead; the view from the lookout with my mum.

I traveled home to Huntsville, ON for the holidays this year, and have been doing lots of skiing, baking and enjoying of the baking so far. The skiing for me has taken place at Arrowhead Provincial Park, which was also the site of the 2013 National Masters Cross Country Skiing champs this past year. The park is a ~15min drive from downtown and has a great little network of both classic and skate trails that have been greatly improved with the recent addition of a new Pisten Bully to the park's equipment repertoire. It's a busy spot this time of year and it often feels like the whole town is out zipping along beside the lake!

Beautifully groomed Beaver Meadow classic trail on a sunny -25 degree Celsius day!

The baking has consisted of batches of coconut, cranberry, chocolate granola (a breakfast treat), and a few rounds of cookies and brownies. I'm a believer in "everything in moderation" so I moderated all the sweets with some nutritious, training-friendly foods. I've been mixing up a big fruit smoothie for pre-skiing breakfast and tossing in some FLY ™ carbohydrate powder to up the glycogen content in the drink. I find this concoction to be perfect for gearing up for long days at the park.

Smoothie success! Enjoying some delicious pre-ski draank.

POMEGRANATE BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE
  •  2 very ripe bananas
  • 1 cup frozen pomegranate seeds
  • 1 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 1/2 cup milk (I like to use almond milk, but rice, soy, coconut or regular cow milk are equally as tasty)
  • 2 scoops of FLY ™ carbohydrate power from eLoad.

Toss the bananas, frozen strawberries and pomegranate seeds (either frozen or raw would work fine) into a blender with milk beverage and orange juice.

Blend until smooth, then add
FLY ™ powder and blend for another few seconds until mixed.

Enjoy your super-fast and energy-rich drink!

ELoad's
FLY ™ is an awesome addition to training nutrition -- I know the importance of staying hydrated, and I find it's often easier to drink your calories when it's so cold that your granola bars freeze and become tooth breakers.

Headed out for a classic with my sister on another chilly day in Arrowhead.

Much of our team is headed off to Canmore, AB next week for the exciting week of racing at Juniors/U23 Trials, so I'll be waving goodbye to Huntsville for a little while. Have a safe and fun rest of your holidays, and Happy New Year from XC Ottawa!
