Chelsea Challenge 2011

The Chelsea Challenge is a special event. It helps that it's on Thanksgiving weekend, when the Gatineau Park is at its all time splendor. Plus, everyone is doubly happy to have an extra day off with another excuse to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

My XC Ottawa teammate Katie insisted it was the best events around, and I met up with an old friend at the start who admitted the community spirit she saw here years ago was one of the things that convinced she and her husband to move their family to Chelsea. It's also a popular event for cross country skiers from local clubs.  Local merchants support the race with great door prizes, and all proceeds go to Maison Libere-elles, a shelter for women and children survivors of family violence.

The race has been run for 21 years, and some of the runners have been doing it since they were in strollers.  This year's event was another success, and the weather certainly cooperated! In the end, Katie decided she needed to rest, not race, but fortunately that means she could take some pictures I could share.

You'll find the race results are here: 5k, 10k

Old picture from -  2001? Participating in this race might foster XC ski success. . . do you recognize some of these boys?

And now for 2011 race pictures - thanks Katie!
