Next week, XC Ottawa’s own Gavin Hamilton will be away up in the far North, skiing for Ontario at the Canada Winter Games. Gavin has had an incredible journey to get to the Canada Games – he started skiing seriously only three years ago, when he got to Carleton University. Gavin’s progression has been phenomenal since he started skiing – he has a huge engine and a wicked attitude towards the sport (and life in general) – and both of those attributes have helped him achieve a lot in a short time – getting to the Canada Games is a great accomplishment with stiff competition.
The Canada Winter Games is in Whitehorse this year, the first time they’ve ever had it in the North. Predictably, they’re in the middle of a super-cold snap, but hopefully they’ll get a couple of races off. Their super-fun cross-country trails have been overhauled, to make way for a much-improved stadium area, trail widening, and other significant additions. Whitehorse boasts a tremendous ski community that has put a huge amount of effort into this event – expect a world-class set of races.
Gavin will be a medal threat
at this races. His best chance is likely the 10k mass start skate
race on March 8th, cuz he just LOVES working hard and hanging
onto people. Other races include a 7.5k classic race (March 5th),
a skate sprint (March 6th), and a 4x5k relay event (March
9th), in which Ontario should field a very strong team.
