2007 Keskinada: 10 Tips for Fast Enjoyable Parkway Racing!

2. Fast gliding skis will be important for a parkway race. XC Ottawa will be out testing the best wax combinations for the snow conditions and temperature. Be sure to check www.xcottawa.ca for waxing tips.
3. In skating, use techniques that allow you to glide and relax more (1-skate and 2-skate).
4. Select your most stable pair of skis that feel comfortable 1-skating or 2-skating.
5. Keep your head up and be alert and aware of oncoming racers! This is especially important in the skating race. Although the parkway will be groomed a bit wider than usual (one track on each side), this is still not a lot of room for 2-way traffic.
6. Those parkway downhills can be cold! Dress warmer than you would if you were skiing on trails. To avoid getting chilled, depending on the temperature, you may need wind proof clothing (but breathable so you don't sweat too much on the uphills); wind briefs, front-lined lifa and tights.
7. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the wind and cold. If it's cloudy, use bright lenses.
8. Apply Dermatone or other wind/sun protection lotion on your face.
9. Ski in a pack! Tuck in behind someone, don't step on their poles, and do your share
of the leading.
10. Use the downhills wisely . . . there's not a lot of recovery on a parkway course.
