This past weekend several XC Ottawa members (Erika, Eva, Linnea, Ed, Gavin) travelled down to the OUA Championships in Sudbury to compete with Carleton University. Both the men and women were looking for redemption after coming second to Lakehead at the Eastern Canadians. The bus ride there went fairly quickly as our coach, John Lanstone, brought the tapes of the Olympic team sprint race to get us in the racing mood.
Arriving Friday afternoon we found Sudbury cold and windy with the temperature expected to drop to -28 over night. The course was very picturesque with many rolling climbs which would require lots of transitions and diagonal stride. All the technique work we've done would definitely come in handy! We would race an individual classic race as well as a relay on the Saturday and then compete in the individual skate race on the Sunday.
Saturday morning the races were delayed half an hour due to the cold but at -19 they decided to run the race. We had pretty good perfomances in the morning races, with Ed and Gavin in the top 10, and Eva placing 8th among the women. The relay race was difficult after the 10km race in the morning but our team of Chris Mamen, Ed Mcarthy and myself were able to come in 3rd (behind both Lakehead teams). The Carleton women A team of Eva, Linnea, and Alysia had the same fate as the men as Lakehead's Emily Hayman was able to outsprint Alysia in the final leg.
On Sunday the race went off without delay and again the Carleton team came in second to the Lakehead contingent. Notable efforts of the day probably would have to go to Chris Mamen with the top Carleton place of 7th and Linnea, who finished 11th.
Ed, Chris, and Eva were all OUA All-Stars. Overall, I think the Carleton athletes were happy with their races, but it turned out that Lakehead was just too strong for us (or, they probably just had better skis!).
