After a Christmas day and night full of rain that had even the most devoted winter haters desperate for snow, many eager racers wondered about the state of the Nakkertok racing trails. Boxing day dawned with . . . more rain! While the rain did wash away a good deal of the white stuff at Nakkertok, thanks to great trail clearing efforts in the fall, and Dirk and Dave’s tireless track setting, a 5k and 3k loop were ready for the first race of the Karhu-XC-Ottawa Race Series.
Racers were treated to an exciting course! Steep uphills, fast dowhills, and twisting and turning sections constantly challenged technique, strength, and fitness. The lack of snow revealed a bumpy surface with occasional twigs and dirt peeking out, which tested a skiers’ ability to stay alert and adapt their technique a little more than usual to suit the terrain. All in all, a lot of fun was had.
Nakkertok members were out in force and assured a smooth run event despite the weather challenges. Thanks especially to Dave Mallory, Dirk & Claudia Van Wijk, Jim & Jean McCarthy, Jim Bradford and Sue Holloway. This organization is certainly ready to host the Eastern Canadian Championships in February.
KARHU RACING SKIS
The draw for Karhu racing skis was won by Sofia Attali. Lucky girl!
Many thanks to Karhu for donating a pair of race skis for a draw prize, Clif Bar who provided bars, Eload for energy drink, and Nakkertok volunteers for track setting, registration, timing, and course marshalling.
Don’t miss the next race in the Karhu-XC-Ottawa Race series on January 14th at 1:00 PM (this is a later starting time than previously published). The race will be classic technique, with distances from 5k to 10k, and shorter distances for the kids. The event is part of the NCD points series. We will be drawing a second pair of Karhu skis at this event.
