Ottawa-Gatineau area cross country skiers are lucky to have access to rollerski on Gatineau Park's parkways when they are closed to cars and other motor vehicles to support recreation in the Park. Many thanks to Ian Lennie who has been coordinating Gatineau Parkway Road closures with the NCC for ski clubs for many years.

Here is a note from Ian about Parkway Closures and the Schedule for this Fall:

Weekday Evenings

  • Weekday evening closures of the North Loop will continue Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until Sun., Oct. 23, when the entire parkway system will be closed for the winter. Thank you to Moe Samm and Chelsea Nordiq, and Jean Thie (Tues.), Dave McMahon, Lise Meloche and XC Zone (Wed.) and Raphaël Couturier and Skinouk (Thurs.) for volunteering to take care of these closures.
  • Thank you also to those who have done the deed throughout this spring and summer: coaches and volunteers from Chelsea Nordiq and Nakkertok, and our Tues. and Wed. evening stalwarts: Jean Thie (Tues.), and Pierre Miller and Marc-André Audette and volunteers from their clubs, Le Club Espoir Triathlon de Gatineau and Les Cuisses Or de l’Outaouais (Wed.).

Weekend Road Closures

  • The Short Loop (P9 to Mica, the intersection of the Gatineau and Champlain Pkwys.) will be closed to vehicular traffic both Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
  • The North Loop (P8-P9) will stay shut both days an extra two hours, until 1:00 p.m.

Fall Rhapsody Schedule

The Saturday and Sunday short loop program will be shortened during the weekends of the Fall Rhapsody, October 1stand 2nd, 8th and 9th and 15th and 16th .

The closures will be from 6 am until 10:30 am, time at which all of Gatineau parkway (including north loop section) will reopen to vehicular circulation. The Fall Rhapsody is a busy time of year in the park and these early reopening hours will be key in allowing traffic flow through the park. Please take note and organize your training sessions accordingly.

The NCC asks roller-skiers and inline skaters to be sure they are off the Mica-P8 portion of the Short Loop by 11:00 on weekends (and 10:30 during the Fall Rhapsody weekends). To quote the NCC: "This is for safety reasons of course. The volume of cyclists is already quite high and when you throw the introduction of cars in the equation, the parkways become pretty narrow quite quickly.

Please move safely and considerately, and enjoy the parkways.  See you out there!
