Lake Placid Skiing in October

On Wednesday snow hit New England big time, over a foot of snow in places in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Not sure if Quebec got any, but Ottawa did not. I had already planned on driving down to Vermont on Saturday with a load of skis for grinding for Zach Caldwell at Engineered Tuning. Would the snow hold out? I was skeptical, but on Friday ORDA announced that the Verizon Sports Complex in Lake Placid would groom trails for skiing on Saturday, so thing were looking up.

On the drive down to Vermont there were signs of snow by the border, and the mountains around Burlington were snow covered. The high spots along the the highway had some good snow coverage. After dropping off the skis, we headed back north to Lake Placid. We got in fairly late, but it was abvious there would still be good skiing Sunday.

Sunday morning was like perfect spring skiing. Sunny and warm, but still some powder in the shady spots. We skied for 3 hours on a well groomed 5-6 km loop. They even did a little grooming Sunday morning with the Alpine. Even if I hadn't gone down to Vermont, it would have been well worth the sub 3 hour drive from Ottawa for these conditions. It's not that often you get to ski in October in eastern North America, especially on groomed trails.
