This past Sunday, when most people were racing at the Noram in Duntroon, Karl and I opted to stick a bit closer to home and see what the Pembroke ski club had to offer.
XC Ottawa Alumni Steve Bursey and Alicia Berthiaume currently live in Pembroke and have been promoting this race to us for the past few years. Finally this year, we were free and the weather was good so we went for it.

Alicia...excited about the day!
It is about 1:45 hr. drive from Chelsea, so we got up early and were on the road by 7am. We picked up fellow racer Jesse Godson and were on our way. The thermometer in the car read between -24 and -21 the whole way but it was nice and sunny out and the forecast was warmer so it was looking good.
We were greeted by a cute, wood heated, chalet and friendly volunteers.

Chalet post race
The course was a single loop of 10km (how often do you get to do that?!), and the grooming was excellent. There was a mass start for each distance and everything was done within an hour of the start. I spent the whole race chasing down my good friend Steve who got away at the start and held a consistent 20 second gap on me for the whole the race. The rolling twisty course was great and although I failed to catch back up to him, it was fun trying!

Shiny new grooming equipment
Thanks to PAXC for putting on such a great event! It is worth the trip, I highly recommend it for next year.

They are pretty into riding bikes in Pembroke...this one came out after the race. They also have a mountain bike race here in the summer.
