Once again, come join families, fast folks, and little ski fiends at the annual 2012 Boxing Day Burnoff at Nakkertok (South) Nordic, Wednesday December 26th. Come on out to this “fun-first” race and team up with your friends against all challengers. We’ve got a great new race format this year, continuing with the tradition of innovative and fun Burnoff race events.
We will also have a very special surprise for you this year – one that is sure to please all members and guests, young and old. This will take place just before the first race starts, so be sure to be on time, and bring your cameras!
Race Format: MASS START TEAM EVENT. You will team up with two other people (for a team of three), and you will all start the race together. The idea is that you ski with your team and switch off at the front (like a bicycle peleton), or work with the weakest skier, to get your whole team across the line as fast as possible. The THIRD skier from your team across the line will be your team’s finish time. The number of laps that your team will be required to ski will be slightly related to the age(s) of the team members, and will be directly related to the number of servings of Xmas turkey n’ stuffing that each team member had the night before. (By participating, each team agrees to the team’s “seeding” by our (usually) impartial race officials)
Teams: You can either show up with a team (three people), or show up on your own, and we will put you on a team.
Categories: We will likely have TWO categories: Totally Undone by Gravy (TUGs) and Just Enough Turkey (JETs). The TUGs will be the folks who are a bit less competitive – older, wiser, younger – than the JETs. You can choose which category you’d like to be in, based in part on your shrewd judgment of the speed of your team-mates. The TUGs category will be fewer laps than the JETs category.

Who: Everyone and anyone is welcome to participate, whether you’ve raced before or if you have only watched others race. Some people may be going fast, but others will be staggering under the weight of prodigious turkey consumption the previous night. The whole idea is to have fun with family and friends, and to enjoy the great Nakkertok outdoors for a few hours.
When: Boxing Day, Wednesday December 26th. Please arrive at the South Chalet by at least 9:30 am to register. The TUGs race will start at 10:00 am, and the JETs category at 10:30 am.
Where: Nakkertok Nordic South XC Centre
Registration: through Zone 4 OR register on the event day at the South Chalet. Registration on event day opens at 8:30 am – you must be registered by 9:30 am.
Cost: $5 per person/$15 per team. We also encourage all participants to bring a donation of non-perishable food items so that Nakkertok can make a Xmas donation to the local food bank.
Costumes: Yes please!! Outrageous preferred, and team themed would be great.
Prizes: We’ll come up with something great for all ages!
Volunteering: Really? THAT would be awesome. Track down Tom McCarthy or sign up at the registration/volunteer table when you get there.
Afterwards: Nakkertok will provide hot beverages for all. If you want, please bring along any extra Christmas food items (cookies, chocolate, turkey, etc.) so that we can all “refuel” and have a “potluck” after the races. A Xmas craft table will be set up for the younger kids.
