This past weekend, a handful of XC Ottawa competitors joined the ranks of many keen local athletes in Thea's Race, which is held at the exciting trails of Nakkertok North. In case you missed the race notice posted last week, Thea's Race is a great local event held annually by Nakkertok Nordic. It commemorates Thea Holloway, a founding member of the club. The low-pressure atmosphere and twisting trails make it a very fun event!
Katie, Sheila and Ingrid discussing race tactics...or maybe eyeing up the chocolate milk that would soon be available after the race.
Lee's getting ready to rock.
Because of rough trail conditions, the 12km race was shortened to 8km on a 2km course this year. It was a quick 2km loop and conditions were definitely a bit tricky. I for one took a pretty good nose-dive on the first lap, and narrowly missed falling a second time (greeted by cheers from the course marshals when I finally regained my balance...thanks!). From what I saw, there were other racers doing acrobatics on the course too though ... some were even in the trees! It must have been entertaining to be a spectator for this event. Overall, everyone seemed to have a fun time on the course, with the added bonus of door prizes afterwards.
The midget boys line up at the start of their race.
A strong pack of Nakkertok skiers racing in the midget girl's category.
As for the results, Sheila, Ingrid, myself, and Katie placed 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 9th respectively in the senior women's 8km race. This category was won by Alana Thomas of Nakkertok. Lee represented XC Ottawa in the men's field, with a solid 3rd place in the senior men's category. The men's race was won by Steffan Lloyd of Nakkertok. Thanks to Sheila for the photos!
