The 2010 SKI X-C FAST season has come to a close and with great success! This winter SKI X-C FAST was able to provide skate ski instruction to almost 2600 students (from grades 5 to 12) in the Ottawa region. Since its inception in 2006 SKI XC FAST has been able to instruct over 7900 students in the technique and joy of cross-country skiing. It is by far the largest and most successful program of its kind in Canada.
SKI XC FAST's unique instructional method, its very experienced and professional instructors and its quality equipment has ensured that the participants leave each session thinking that cross-country skiing is fast and fun.
What is more important is that the majority of SKI X-C FAST clients come from a variety of non-Nordic communities: new-Canadians, economically and/or socially challenged families. Communities that view winter, snow and snow/ice sports as evil, dangerous and ultimately inaccessible. They just don't go outside in winter. SKI X-C FAST provides our clients with a different outlook on winter: that outdoor winter activity is fun, safe, accessible and exciting.
Snowshoe FAST, season #1 was offered during the winter of 2010. It is a snowshoeing program created specifically for students in grades 2 to 4 and a program developed at the request of our clients. It is SKI X-C FAST's sister program. Snowshoe FAST has the same goals and instructional approach as SKI X-C FAST: being outside in winter is fun and safe; and, learning through games. During the winter of 2010 over 1000 students participated in Snowshoe FAST! It is anticipated that this program will, at the very least, double its participation in 2011.
What is very unique to SKI X-C FAST and Snowshoe FAST is that each program will bring the equipment and instruction to where its clients can afford to participate. This could be in the school-yard or at a local Nordic facility (Terry Fox, Nakkertok, Riverfront Park in Kanata.
