When I was a kid in high school living along the Rideau River near Main street, I logged quite a few kms on the trails at Mooney's Bay. It was easy to get to, had lights for skiing at night, and provided some pretty reasonable skiing for what is really the middle of the city.

For the same reasons that it was good for me, it could be a good place for many to enjoy skiing. Lately, however, Mooney's Bay is even more attractive as a ski area. Part of the reason is that the grooming and ski rentals are being looked after by Lafleur de la Capitale Inc, who we all know are very serious about providing optimal skiing conditions. For the first time, the Mooney's Bay trails are being groomed with a Pisten Bully which also required modifying one of the garages so that there would be enough space to store it. A full fleet of rental equipment is available on site for very moderate prices. Mooney's Bay also offers a variety of ski lessons at various convenient times throughout the week for all ages and abilities.

For a very modest $2.50 per day or $29 for the season you have access to all of the following at the Mooney's Bay Ski Centre. Can you say GOOD DEAL?

  • 5 km of groomed trails for both classic and skate (freestyle) skiing techniques

  • Indoor change rooms and washrooms

  • Lit trails for night skiing

  • A ski tuck shop and hot chocolate for sale

  • Free use of our indoor wax benches and waxing irons

  • Free information on equipment, clothing, waxing, trails and related services

  • Free parking and ski rentals available on site

Mooney's Bay has great hours of operation as well, being open from Monday to Friday from 9AM until 9PM, and on the weekends between 9AM and 5PM.

In terms of lessons and programs, there is much to offer for children, youth and adults from experienced and qualified instructors. Features include:

  • Classes for all abilities from beginner to advanced

  • Classic or skate skiing lessons

  • Lessons offered seven days a week with convenient day and evening options

  • Guided outings to Gatineau Park and Greenbelt

  • Special group packages available

So, get out there and give it a try! For more information, please go to: http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/parks_recreation/seasonal/fw/xc_skiing/index_en.html
