Haywood NorAm Eastern Canadian Championships- Race Report

Saturday - Mass Start Classic
Saturday's classic races finally got underway after a 2-hour delay because of cold weather. But the racers did not starve because each athlete got a free healthy lunch complete with cheese curds and chocolate bars! It was a mass start classic day, with the open men racing 20km and the open women 15km. Karl Saidla could not race this weekend because of a recent rib injury. Hopefully he’ll be back racing next weekend for the Super Tour in Vermont!
Colin Abbott, with his “cat-like” classic technique, placed 5th overall and 3rd in Junior Men. Nakkertok’s Steffan Lloyd and Andrew Stewart-Jones placed 3rd and 4th respectively in open men. Matthias Purdon placed 14th in Junior Men and Justin Demers finished at 8th in open men.
Alana Thomas, Megan McTavish and Sheila Kealey placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the Open Women's 15km. Way to represent XC Ottawa on the podium! Zoe Braul finished in 3rd place in Junior Women and Adele was 7th. Brittany Smith raced the Junior Girl's 10km and finished in 14th, despite having a broken pole for the entire race.
Sunday - Interval Start Skate
On Sunday, Colin Abbott, Justin Demers and Brittany Smith awoke to a cold! They unfortunately did not race but were around to cheer. Matthias Purdon was XC Ottawa’s only representation in the men’s interval start skate 10km race but he did not disappoint. He had a strong race and finished 7th in Junior Men and 14th overall.
Megan had an amazing race and won the Open Women's 10km event! The Open Women category had lots of serious competitors with skiers from all around Canada, many of which train full time. This is a great result for Megan and XC Ottawa is proud of her. XC Ottawa represented well once again on the NorAm Overall podium with Alana placing 3rd and Sheila was a close 4th.
Adele had a great race as well, placing 1st in Junior Women. Congratulations! Zoe came 9th in Junior Women.
Overall, it was a good weekend of racing for XC Ottawa. Thanks to Brian Suke and Francois Demers who helped coach John wax. We appreciate all your help!
Thanks to Skinouk for hosting a great event! Thanks also for distributing Klister Licker t-shirts as prizes, this helps support us while also make the ski community more fashionable.
