Eastern Canadian Championships This Weekend in Gatineau Park!

This weekend Skinouk is hosting the Eastern Canadian Championships at Relais Plein Air. There will be lots of racing action happening with skiers from Midgets to Masters from Ontario to Newfoundland. The number of racers at Easterns tend to exceed the number at the National Championships so it will be a great race to watch or be a part of.
Skinouk has done a lot of work in preparation for the weekend and we are sure that the races will be well run and lots of fun. It looks like someone at Skinouk has read some of Karl's articles and he will be very pleased with the weekend's setup!
The first thing I noticed was that the races will be held on long loops - 10km loop for 10km and 20km races and a 15km loop for a 15km race. This is a refreshing change from the norm, as these days we often race on multiple laps of 2.5 or 3.75km loops (see Karl's article on short loops http://www.xcottawa.ca/articles.php?id=948).
Another thing that struck me was that in the Open Men and Women categories, the race distances were not very different. Karl wrote another article about this (http://www.xcottawa.ca/articles.php?id=1153). At the Easterns both the men and women do a 10km skate and for the classic race the men do 20km and the women do 15km, rather than the traditional half distance that the women normally do. Its great to see race organizers change things up a bit and keep our lives as racers a bit more interesting!
XC Ottawa will be out in full force this weekend and we are looking forward to some great racing!
We will post results and pictures as soon as possible following the races.
Hope to see lots of you out there!
