World Masters Championship 2009

Masters, have you ever thought about participating in the World Cross-Country Championships?

Open to skiers from all levels, the World Masters Championship is truly a unique opportunity to participate in a world-class event celebrating your passion, cross-country skiing. A very good excuse for a good race and a great winter vacation.

My hometown region has been chosen to be the site of the 2009 edition. The 2009 World Masters Championship will be held in Autrans, France, January 30 – February 6, 2009. Easy to get to, Autrans is located in the plateau du Vercors, only 30K away from Grenoble, the most populated city of the French Alps and host of the Winter Olympics 1968.

The old ski resort, Autrans is particularly known for cross-country: the "Foulée Blanche", a cross-country race as big as Keskinada, is organized here in Autrans every year. The ski domain of Autrans is vast, and is partly equipped with an artificial snow system.

One of the best things of cross-country skiing in the alps is that you have no worries about frostbite! Nice and mild winter weather is always expected here.

Besides cross-country skiing, there are also many interesting activities in the Autrans area. If you have some energy left, I particularly recommend a day of downhill skiing on 3000m mountains. Sensational scenery guaranteed.

If you are interested in exploring the area more, Lyon and Chamonix are waiting for you less than a two hour drive from Autrans. Lyon, with its UNESCO world heritage site downtown, and Chamonix, at the foot of the majestic Mont-Blanc, are must-visit destinations. Whatever you decide to do, you are guaranteed with a memorable gastronomic experience.

How to register for the World Masters Championship?

(at least, the way I did it)

1 – Get a masters racing licence from Cross Country Canada
2 – Get the registration form from the World Masters Cross-Country Ski Association website
3 – Submit the registration form to the masters cross-country national director of Canada before December 28.

Additional information can be found in an article on the World Masters Cross-Country Championship 2008 in SkiTrax magazine, Spring 2008.

Hiking on the Plateau du Vercors, July 09. You can see Grenoble in the valley. Without the clouds, we should normally be able to see the Mont-Blanc. The second crest behind me is Autrans.
